Depression is a common illness occurring as many as 1 in 10 adults at any one time in Britain and the need to increase awareness and understanding has never been greater. Alcohol Focus Scotland
Currently the only Scottish charity dedicated to raising awareness of, and reducing the significant health and social harm caused by, alcohol. Annsbrae House
Annsbrae House offers 8 supported accomodation tenancies together with a Skills Centre. There is a short break flat available and Social Care Workers provide an outreach service from Annsbrae House. The service is accessed through referral from the Community Mental Health Team.
Alzheimer’s Scotland

ASIST
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training is designed as a “suicide first aid” course. It teaches you to become more willing, ready and able to recognise and intervene effectively in order to help people at risk of suicide. ASIST operates as a consecutive two day workshop.

Community Bike Project
The community bike project offers an opportunity for rehabilitative support for clients referred from the Community Alcohol and Drugs service. Community Care
Community Care services are designed to help older people and vulnerable people in their own homes. Community Mediation
Sometimes problems can escalate and this can cause disputes in your neighbourhood or local community. Leaving Home
Many young people leave home in an unplanned way or lack the knowledge and skills to obtain and successfully maintain suitable accommodation. This can and does lead to housing crisis and, in the most extreme cases, homelessness. Living Life is a telephone service based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) They provide help for people suffering from low mood, mild to moderate depression, symptoms of anxiety or a combination of both. Mental Health Carer's Group
Mental Health Carer's Group meet on the first Monday of each month at Shetland Link Up from 7pm - 9pm. The group is for carers who support family who have Mental Health problems. Caring for someone with mental ill health can be an enormous burden, bringing with it feelings of anger, fear, anxiety and isolation. Feelings of powerlessness can often stem from not knowing where to get help, or from being unable to exchange ideas with somebody else who is going through a similar crisis. Shetland Befriending Scheme
Aimed at people between the ages of 7 and 25, the befriending scheme can help give young people the confidence they need to reach their full potential. The young person will be matched with a befriender and they will then meet up and do activities together. Activities can range from sports, to crafts, to just meeting up for a coffee and a chat. Children under the age of 16 must be referred to the service, and young people aged 16 and over can self refer. Shetland Bereavement Support Service
Bereavement is an experience for all of us at some point in our lives. Although it can seem really difficult, finding someone to talk to about how you’re feeling can be an important first step in coming to terms with the death of someone close. When you’re going through something so painful, it is hard to believe that anyone else can understand. This can lead to feeling isolated and finding it hard to talk to friends and family so you may find it easier to speak to a bereavement support worker. Shetland Carer’s Group
The aim of outreach groups for carers is to make sure that no carer has to reach crisis point before they get the support they need. In short, their purpose is to make it easier for carers to cope.
The Central Carers Group meets monthly, the meetings are held at The Havly Cafe, Charlotte Street, Lerwick.
A new Young Carers Group will begin on Thursday 24th February at 3.45pm at The Bruce Family Centre, Lovers Loan, Lerwick. The group will offer support, a place to meet with other young carers and to take part in an activity of your choice. If you care for a member of your family through ill health, disability, a mental health issue or through drug or alcohol dependency why not come along and join us and share your ideas.
Revised dates for the Young Carers Summer Sessions are: 28th July 2pm - 4pm & 11th August 2pm - 4pm. Both sessions will be held at the Bruce Family Centre.

Trauma Counselling Line Scotland
Health in Mind have launched a unique telephone counselling service to support male survivors of childhood sexual abuse in Scotland. Women's Aid work to end violence against women. Shetland Women's Aid can offer free confidential counselling to women who have previously or are currently experiencing domestic abuse. Women's Aid offer children and young people who have experienced or are currently experiencing domestic abuse or family breakdown one to one therapeutic support. They also provide a preventative educational outreach service to young people in schools and other informal youth settings. WRVS
WRVS is an age positive charity that offers a range of practical services to help and support older people to live well, maintain their independence and play a part in their local community.
